Snorkeling on Orchid Island is an incredible experience, and can be done in the safety of natural pools within the porous lava rock that comprises most of the island’s coastline. And then there are the mountain goats, who have perfected the art of sea-gazing, as it were. It’s difficult to determine the ratio of natural inclination to sheer wonder. The cool sea breeze might factor in as well, but it still doesn’t explain the awestruck look in their eyes … which leads one to wonder, do mountain goats have a sense of aesthetic? Do they prefer one seascape over another? By the time you leave the island you will have entered a constant state of awe. Just bear in mind that there is almost no commercial development. Food and lodging are hard to come by. And securing a room at a guesthouse does not mean that you won’t go hungry. Bring food … lots of it. This is especially important in the summer months, when typhoons are rampant and have a tendency to change direction without prior notice.
